(1930 – 2022) • Eminent USA Engineer & Visionary Philanthropist
Kanailal Raha Seva Sadan stands as a living monument to the extraordinary vision, humility, and generosity of Late Shri Kanailal Raha. A distinguished engineer who achieved great professional success in the United States, Shri Raha dedicated his life's savings to creating a state-of-the-art non-profit healthcare center for the underserved rural population of Purba Medinipur, West Bengal.
His deep love for his motherland and firm belief that quality medical care is a basic human right continue to inspire our doctors, medical staff, and administration every single day.
Born in Bengal in 1930, Shri Kanailal Raha exhibited brilliant academic talent from an early age. Following his engineering graduation with distinction, he migrated to the United States in pursuit of higher professional avenues. Over a career spanning four decades in America, he established himself as a highly respected senior engineer, contributing to landmark structural and infrastructure projects across the country.
Despite achieving immense material success and recognition abroad, Shri Raha maintained a remarkably frugal and disciplined lifestyle. He never lost sight of his roots in Bengal, nor did he forget the harsh realities faced by poor families in rural districts like Purba Medinipur who suffered without access to basic medical treatments and specialized eye care.
During his visits back home, Shri Raha observed that preventable blindness, untreated cataracts, and oral health afflictions were rampant in rural villages. Elderly villagers often lost their eyesight simply because specialized eye surgery required traveling 130 km to Kolkata—an expensive journey beyond their reach.
Determined to address this inequality, he established the Kanailal Raha Foundation and pledged his hard-earned savings toward constructing a dedicated healthcare hospital. To ensure ethical management, grassroots reach, and long-term sustainability, he partnered with Sarboday Sangha—a reputed socio-medical voluntary organization in West Bengal.
Together, opposite the Heria Primary Health Centre at Ataramchak, they established Kanailal Raha Seva Sadan—equipping it with advanced ophthalmic surgical suites, digital pathology, dental care, general OPD, and mobile health outreach units.
Generously funded the land procurement, architectural layout, and building construction of Kanailal Raha Seva Sadan at Ataramchak, Heria, establishing a modern multi-specialty clinical facility for Purba Medinipur.
Supported the acquisition of modern Phacoemulsification eye surgery units, computerized autorefractometers, dental operating chairs, auto-analyzers for pathology, and digital X-ray diagnostics.
Created an enduring endowment fund ensuring that destitute patients receive micro-incision cataract surgeries (SICS & Phaco) with intraocular lens (IOL) implants completely free of cost or at heavily subsidized rates.
Championed the deployment of Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) equipped with medical personnel to screen patients in remote coastal villages of Khejuri, Contai, and Bhagwanpur.
“Professional achievement and personal wealth acquire true meaning only when dedicated to relieving human suffering and restoring dignity to those who need it most.”
